Common Diesel Engine Noise Problems

If you’ve got a diesel vehicle, then you understand that some noises are expected. After all, these engines let you know when they’re running. You’ve invested in such a vehicle to get the most use out of it and heavy-duty tasks accomplished. In addition to regular maintenance, being aware of common diesel engine noise problems can help you keep your truck running exactly how intended for longer.

Knocking

Though a knocking sound can be a little unsettling, it’s not always a bad thing in diesel engines. The knocking or clicking comes from your fuel injectors. If they are poorly lubricated, you can hear that sound. To avoid this, use good fuel, and the noise should stop. However, if it continues, you may need to replace your fuel injectors.

Ticking

One of the main reasons for ticking to happen is a lack of proper lubrication of the valvetrain components. Low oil levels cause this to happen. If you hear a ticking sound, the first thing you should do is check your oil and make sure it’s not low. If it is, service your vehicle immediately. Ticking can also be the result of a connector rod gone bad or a faulty lifter. If this is the case, the issue is more serious and will require a motor rebuild.

Rattling

There are a couple of possible reasons for you to hear rattling sounds. It could be that you’re using the wrong fuel. However, a more problematic explanation could be an issue with the belt tensioner. This is responsible for maintaining tension through the force application, so any problems with it should be evaluated immediately.

Other

If there is an odd sound coming from the timing chain, it’s most likely due to looseness. Putting off fixing an issue like this may cause the timing chain to come off. If this happens, your engine will be seriously damaged, and resolving it will be a much bigger issue.

If your vehicle is experiencing any of these common diesel engine noise problems, they should be addressed immediately. Some issues can be resolved before they affect other parts. However, if you are in need, turn to ATL Diesel for Cummins engine parts to get you back on the road as soon as possible.
